Neighbors keep dying...?

Whenever I log back into the game the next day, I always get a notification telling me that one of my neighbors has died. Is this supposed to be part of the games mechanic or plot device?

Neighbors tend to die when you exit the game and come back.. It's not a plot thing, that's just the way the game's offline progression works. I think you only lose 1 morale point for each dead neighbor.
