How do I get tails to fly through the ring?

On Sonic Stage 1 I believe it is, I have gotten to the part where Sonic and the whales and sonic tells tails to close the gate so they can't get out. Tails flys from the one island to the other, kills the enemy, and is supposed to fly through the ring looking thing in the sky. For some reason tails just will not go through the ring! He always gets tired of flying and either dies right before the ring or he goes over the ring. I can not manage to get him to go through the ring! Can anyone help me with this? How do I get tails to go through the ring?

Try to take the shortcut instead all you have to do is kill the guy then turn left you see boxes destroy them then fly that direction and you'll land on a island keep going from there

Tails probaly gets tired because he's been flying for to long. Before that part, make sure Tails is not flying(or, you haven't had him flying for to long). Then, when you get to that part. Have him fly. If you didn't have him fly/fly for a long time, he should have enough energy to fly through the ring-like thing.
