On Sonic Generations can the game be saved? My grandson does not know how to save his game when he has to stop, so he has to start over every time he plays.

This game saves through an autosave function. So long as he has a hard drive installed in his Xbox, the game should configure itself to automatically save the game once you have hit certain key points in the storyline.
Saving the game on the 360 is pretty obvious so I am going to guess you asked this in the wrong area and are playing the PC version which has a known issue with game saving. You have to run the game as Administrator or it will not save.
All you do is go to the pause menu and exit game and it will save
