To open up the wardrobe trunk in Tumblety's place, I just tried an exhaustive approach.
There are only 6 dates at the bottom of the screen. Put one of them in all 5 latches and start flipping through the flags and hats/coats until the bolt on the right unlocks. Repeat the same process for the rest of the latches, except for Vicksburg.
The date for Vicksburg is 1 day after the date for Gettysburg, as indicated by 'The morrow, the key!' message scribbled on the face of the lock.

020563 - Chancellorsville, Flag: white star, blue background, Hat: greyish
030763 - Gettysburg, Flag: green, Hat: green
210968 - DOESN'T WORK
121971 - DOESN'T WORK
120461 - Fort Sumter, Flag: Confederate (blue X, red background), Hat: grey
170962 - Antietam, Flag: blue with eagle, Hat: blue
040763 - Vicksburg, Flag: blue? Hat: blue? [didn't see clearly, as it was the last lock I was solving]
