It is a female, and there is no point in not telling you, seeing as poleio already told you, but yes it is Jill Vallentine. Jill is Chris's old partner, who he thinks to be dead, untill he finds her picture in a message on his PDA. He then becomes set on finding her, and later you find her working with Wesker (as you later soon find, against her own will) and after you get through the first fight with Wesker you have to fight Jill. But keep in micd, that if you kill her, you fail. What you do is you get close to her and press X when you see "entreat" pop up on the screen, this will make Chris talk to Jill and try to talk her out of her trance, once you do this enough you must sneak up behind her and then press X when "restrain" shows up on the screen. Then I believe you have to repeatedly press A to hold her. Sheva will come up and try to pull the device off of Jill's chest. Ou may also have Sheva restrain her and you pull of the device. There is also the option to hold Jill while Sheva shoots the device, either way, the only way to beat this fight is to remove the device. Hope this helps out with your question and later in the game.
