you cant autosave. unless you do a mission. once you beat that mission it autosaves. but you cant use your basic campsite and save your game wherever you are.

If you happen to own a deed to a horse you can kill it and select the deed in you inventory and it autosaves.

The game autosaves whenever you complete a significant event, and it is supposed to autosave when you drop to the main menu.
