Question for Project Gotham Racing 3

I think there's a serious bug in the game or something.
I was watching a replay of the world's best in one of the drift mode.
He got 340 k just by backing up and drive forward. He didn't do anything.
Now to the quistion: Is that a cheat, or is it something everyone can do??
I tried to do it but I didn't work.
Pleas answer.
