Wow this is an old question... But for the sake of answering it:

I'm pretty sure that when you are in a game lobby before searching for players, open up your friend('s) GamerCard and there should be an option saying "Invite to game". They will then be sent an invitation to join; should they accept, they will be connected to your game.

If this doesn't work, sorry.
