How do you play 2 players on the same console in online play?

ANSWERS

When you press start after the opening sequence, have controller 2 on. When you're at the menu have controller 2 press "A". When an xbox window opens telling you to sign n have #2 join as a guest or as a file with xbox live gold. Gold only! Unfortunately, rank and credits are disabled for guests. You can play with up to 4 people on the same console.

Both players must be Xbox live gold members or One player must be an Xbox live gold member and the other one has to sign in as a guest. I have had this problem before as well

I think you must both be Xbox Live Gold Members. Or one of you must be a guest and the other must be an XBOX live Gold member.
