There seem to be no way to write letters but you can type in numbers by pressing up on the D-PAD to access the phone and then pressing up again to type in numbers.

You cant.
You can dial numbers, like 911, but you can't reply to texts.

You're not able to write messages and stuff. If you wish to reply, you have to call them.
Press Up, on the D-Pad twice, to be able to type numbers.
