The back button brings up your weapons and armor so you can change them when you get better ones or buy new ones.

If you are playing on the PS4 to go to your inventory, press the motion pad on the remote it will bring up your inventory I sat for hours trying to figure this out lol
Well also the trick to equipping better weapons is to watch the stats very close. Just because it's higher in number doesn't mean it's going to perform better. That is what the red and green arrows are for. The more green you have the better off it will be.
