To gain that skill you unlock it in the survival tech tree as you level up your character. Bear in mind that the character class does have an impact on how soon you can do that or if you can reasonably do it at all -- the character of Sam is intended to be a Tank Class, so if you are playing as Sam you may not get all three levels unlocked with him.
