You can't change the difficulty whilst in the theater. First you have to beat the game on the normal difficulty and after the credits you will go onto green platforms, then head right until there is a portal that shows "enter chaos mode". Lastly go throughout the map until you get to the theater and you will be able to fight the two bosses and unlock the goth characters such as the Blood Mage etc.
