I'm partial to the Hurricane Mk2. It has good speed and solid maneuverability, above average durability, and unmatched firepower. There are a few planes that are better for niche missions, like in time trials, but in general it meets your needs. The best part is that the 20mm cannons will take out fighters like nothing, and can take out ground targets making it ideal for support missions. It is an excellent all-around plane that is very forgiving of beginner mistakes and a lot of potential in a more experienced pilot.

While the Hurricane is probably my favorite midwar plane, my all-time favorite is the Gloster Meteor, an excellent all around plane. It's not quite as fast as the ME-262, the other endgame jetfighter, but it has more maneuverability and I find it can usually come out on top. In addition, its arcade mode upgrade puts its speed on par with the 262. Unfortunately, its ace paint job is kinda boring whereas the 262's looks awesome. The only downside is that it takes a while to unlock, because you have to beat the entire campaign and then the dogfight mini-campaign. It's not impossible or anything, but it is a little harder than most of the others. Pretty much every British plane is awesome.
