How do I get more text books on kingdom of keflings? And how do I get the big gems?

I haven't figured out how to get more text books except to earn them from doing the mayors missions and to get the big gems you need a witches hut.
Build the required building (ie. Guild Hall) and whatever amount of books that are not laying about the map will appear in the Town Square. So, if one book is laying around the map and the Guild Hall is built, 2 books will appear in the Town Square.
