If you want to avoid bad phone calls just save the game before answering a call, that way if it's a bad call you can reload the game and try again.
Place the best players on a team and then create a franchise and play. When it gets to the end of the season or playoffs make your players play bad and you'll be able to sign them cheap.
Hold 'Speedburst' when you are on a breakaway and then press X for a slap shot. If you take the shot at an angle you will score about 95% of the time.
