Different styles of teams. Defense edition

All Pro Football has a large playbook allowing you to run all types of defenses to stop anything coming at you but it is better to excell in one type of defense and be decent at all other aspects. There are many different styles of teams and you will have to build teams to counter attack those teams. Coverage defense. A coverage defense is supposed to shut down the passing game. A lot of the plays will be run out of the Nickel, Dime, Nickel 3-3 and Dime 3-2. The nickel formation brings 3 cornerbacks, 2 safeties, 2 linebackers and 4 down linemen. While not effective against the run, this formation excells against 3 reciever sets as there is a corner back for every wide out. The dime formation has 4 cornerbacks, 2 safeties, 1 linebacker and 4 down linemen. This is the base formation against 4 reciever sets as there is a man for every reciever. This formation is also strong against a 3 reciever set that has a gold reciever. You will be able to double team him and he will not be a target for the QB.

Run stopping defense.

For a defense to stop the run it will need a good core of linebackers and down linemen. The linebackers will need to fill any holes and the linemen should make the holes as small as possible. Big, strong linemen are a must. Art Donovan is perfect because he has size and a ton of strength. The linebackers will need superior tackling ability to stop the running back. Run stopping formations are the 4-3, bear, 4-4, and goal line. The 4-3 brings 7 men in the box; 4 down linemen and 3 linebackers. Lined up against a base I formation with 2 recievers, the linemens job is to be double teamed by O-linemen so that that there is less engaged defensive players than offensive players. This will allow a player or two to pursue the running back and with a quality tackle end the play. The 4-4 has 4 linebackers and 4 down linemen. This matches up evenly with a I-From 2 reciever set. When a linemen is double teamed by the O-Line it creates a mis-match so that there will be 2 or 3 defensive players in pursuit of the ball carrier, not including the defensive secondary. The goal line formation is mainly used inside of the 5 yard line, but if a team is having serious problems defending the run it will stop it. The GL formation brings in 5 down linemen and 3 linebakers. Most offenses will use 2 or 3 tight ends at this point with a full back to protect the ball carrier. The safety can be brought into the box so that very little or no holes are made for the ball carrier to go through. This defense is the most vulnerable to the pass as there is only 3 men in the secondary position. Prevent defense. The prevent defense brings 6 or 7 secondary players. 3 linemen and 1 linebacker are used as this formation is built to stop 20 yard plus passes. This defense is used on 3rd and very long or late in the 4th quarter whent he offense is trying to mount a comeback. A special teams edition will be up soon.

Different style of teams. Offense edition

In this game there are so many different legends that there are many types of teams you can build. I will explain the offensive styles of play in this hint. Offense:

Running teams:

There are 3 different styles of running teams; finnesse, power and duo back. A finnesse running team will focus on pitches, tosses, sweeps, and zone runs. The half back should be fast and getting by defenders will depend on jukes and spins. The back will not be able to go through defenders but will dance around them. Your back will tire the defense by making them chase him around the field. The best backs for this style are: O.J. Simpson(gold), Roger Craig(silver), and Dave Meggett(bronze)

A power running team will focus on dives, power, and iso plays. The back will go through defenders and will be slower thn the finnesse backs but much stronger. With power backs you will shoulder charge, stiff arm or power out of tackles. You will run up the middle on most of the plays and wear out the defense through long lasting drives and putting a hurt on their bodies by charging through them. This is my favorite style as I like to nail defenders with a should charge and knock them back a couple yards. The best backs for this style are: Earl Campbell(gold), Ottis Anderson(Silver), and Christian Okoye(bronze)

A duo back team is a team that runs with 2 halfbacks that are both skilled enoug to play at the top level. They usually get equal carries and are meant to keep the defense on their toes. One power back and one finnesse back is the usual combo and the best way to keep the defenders on edge. You can wear them down by runs throuh the middle for a couple of plays and than take your finnesse HB and speed by the tired defense usually for a big gain. Passing teams:

There are two stlyes of passing teams; possession and deep.

A possession passing team focuses on short routes and will utilize the tight end more. The routes ran are usually 5 yard ins/outs, short slants, and curls. This offense is meant to put the ball up a few yards each play so that the defense gets worn out by quick plays right after another. Accurate QB's and recievers with good hands are very important as one missed play puts the short yardage passing team in a pickle. A deep passing team focuses on long, deep routes that go over 20 yards. The usual routes are posts, streaks, and corners. This offense moves the ball up field quickly and wears down the defensive seconday by making them chase the recievers for extended amounts of time. A QB with a strong arm and fast recievers are needed so that the defensive backs can be out ran.

Trick plays:

While this should never be the focal point of an offense it is always fun to throw a trick play into a game. A flea flicker or an HB pass can throw a defense completely off. The HB pass is very hard as your back will have to be able to throw or prepared to be hit. This play has the QB tossing the Hb the ball on what looks like a running play but insteads throws the ball to a reciever. The flea flicker has the QB handing the ball off for what looks like to be a run up the middle but tossing the ball back to the QB and the QB throwing the ball down field.
