I don't intend it to be better than A l e x's, but I intend to make it useful for anyone who would take some time to read it. I'm going to try to make this guide as detailed as humanly possible - heh, I might try the inhumane and make sure everthing in the game - top to bottom - is covered. I don't want you to miss out. Anyways, I'll begin by explaining the battle system and the controls, and how to fight and such - if you're already proficient with the contorls and battle basics, then you can go ahead and skip to whatever section you like. Remember I have created a text to find each section quickly, (above) so read that to find out more information on how to skip to sections a lot quicker. I have decided I will put in other sections as well, to make my guide more complete and detailed - sections that explain the characters in the game, the weapons you'll aquire, and the powers you will gain. Of course, there are hidden items throughout the game that I will be intent on letting you know where they are - they reap some great rewards if found. At the end of the guide, you will find my opinions of the game/story, so you can email about my opinions - I like debating. If you're interested, check out the bugs/glitches/secrets portion of the guide, it lists some interesting stuff like easter eggs and glitches that may help you, may mess you up, or just may be interesting to take a look at. Common FAQs are listed (email me some questions so I can post them there (with your permission)) and finally the end. If you've contributed or emailed me with helpful information, then your name is posted at the end. ,-,---. o--- '|___/ attle System ---------------------------------------as-bas---o ,| \ `-^---' The battle system in this game goes along with a lot of other action games, like Devil May Cry and God of War. I think the controls are extremely well placed and you will most likely use every button that helps you in the game. The only thing that someone would be worried about is the camera which does happen to slip out of view of Ryu most of the time. o--- Controls as-ba1 ---o ------------------------------- Left Thumbstick - Move Character Right Thumbstick - 1st Person Camera (click to zoom w/ bow) Left Trigger - Guard/Block (use left thumb. while guard to roll) Right Trigger - Center Camera A - Jump/Confirm X - Attack/Interact Y - Strong Attack B - Use Projectile Weapon Black - Display Map of Area (if found) White - Display Karma Start - Open Menu Back - ... o--- HUD (Heads-Up-Display) as-ba2 ---o --------------------------------------------- Let me tell you about what you'll see on the screen while playing Ninja Gaiden Black. Alright, we'll start from the upper left hand corner and work our way around the screen. First off, you'll see the ninpo you have equipped, whether it be art of fire wheels or inferno. To the right of that, you'll see your health bar. It is purple when full, but as it decreases, it dies down to orange and red, and it blinks when you are critically injured. If you do have ninpo equipped, you'll see ki flames, a certain amount of flames that are lit. If you have three, and only two are lit, you can only cast those two before manually replenishing your ki by using an elixir of devil way. All that's realy left is your character, Ryu, who is ussually centered i the middle of the screeen. Remember if he isn't, then pull the right trigger to center the camera. o--- Battling as-ba3 ---o ------------------------------- Battling is quite simple, but even if it is, it can get so intense that you'll forget what you're doing. But I'll try and keep you on track. First of all, the "X" button is the standard attack. It's fast, efficient and damage wise, it adds up to pretty devastating. You can combine combos with "X" like XXX or XXX(forward)X. You can experiment with the combos your comfortable with and such. "Y" is the strong attack, but it is usually only used in combos with XXX. You can use it for an Ultimate Tech- nique, an UT, which causes you to charge for about 3 seconds until two explosions of power come from within you, and then release to unleash a devastating attack to those unlucky enough to be caught between it. A UT varies from each weapon so experiment with all to see which one you like the best. A lot of combos have to do with jumping, like the flying swallow. Another tactic for battling is using the wall. You can leap towards a wall, run up it, jump again to flip off, and while in mid-air, press Y to fall with a powerful slash. Of course, the range is limited, but it's good enough to catch even more than one enemy within it's radius. Lastly, don't forget to use your projectile weapons, which can be used instantly by pressing B. Whichever weapon you have equipped comes in your projectile weapon inven- tory, the shuriken, bow, etc etc. You can use these with combos as well, they work well - you will also find yourself sniping enemies or blowing up bosses with your arrows/explosive arrows. Tips as-ba4 o-----------o - Use your environment to your advantage. Make sure you utilize the walls surrounding you to leap off and come down with a strong attack that can injure or maybe even end up killing the enemy you are battling. - Use a variety of weapons. Don't stick with one weapon, instead, utilize your whole arsenal, melee and projectile, so you can defeat your enemies or any bosses. - Always keep stocked on health and ki potions. You'll never know when you will be low on health and a chest full of potions or a muramasa statue is not nearby. - USE ULTIMATE TECHNIQUES!!! Make sure you use the UTs in order to kill enemies faster and even gain a lot more essence to buy whatever you need for your journey. - Don't forget the usefulness of your projectile weapons. The bow is a really good tool for sniping enemies who are either unaware of your presence or are at a range you cannot reach. Shuriken do the job as well, even though if it's a lot slower. Shuriken can build up a lot of combos for karma as well. - Don't use your potions when you don't need to. Again, save them when you need them the most. - The way i play is: don't let you health drop below 1/3 - if so, then you are almost always dead - unless you somehow get a burst of luck and get time to press start and gulp down an elixir. ,. , ,. o--- `| /| / alkthrough ---------------------------------------as-wal---o | / | / `' `' Well, this is your traditional "go here, do this" type of guide, however, to try and dull out the boring parts, I'm going to make it as detailed as possible, with facts to keep you interested, and to make sure you are on the right track. Strategies will be outlined for every enemy, mini-boss , and boss on the way, but you can also find them in the Bestiary portion of this guide. Again, if I make any mistakes in this guide, please email me so I can fix it right away. (nothing stupid like spelling errors). ,--,--' o--- `- | he Way of the Ninja -----------------------------------as-w01---o , | `-' You'll start the game off with an impressive cutscene of the history of the Dragon Sword and the Dark Dragon Blade, and then another which displays Ryu leaping from the peak of the waterfall and falling, only to slice the enemy ninja to his death. You'll take control of Ryu here, so take the time to familiarize yourself with the controls. Once you have gotten down the basics, interact with the dead ninja's body by pressing X, to figure out that the ninja wouldn't have survived in the real world anyways. You will recieve an ELIXIR OF SPIRITUAL LIFE after you read the text. These things will replenish your life a little bit, but not fully. I heals good enough, and you'll keep these around till the end of the game, so use these wisely and only when needed. Once you have picked up the elixir, move left along the rock face, and follow as the ground slowly inclines. Follow it and jump past the rocks in your way with the A button. You'll come across a gap, where a cutscene takes place, in where a kunai with a purple flower tied on to it flies anonymously from the mountains and strikes the wall face beyond the gap. Nothing big here, just jump across the gap to reach the other side. Once here, read the note which is narrarated by a girl. It just explains that you can utilize the walls to climb. Basically, face the wall right from the one that the kunai struck, and then run up the wall. Hold the "A" button (make sure you are close to the edge when you're running up but not close enough to fall off) until you are able to grasp the ledge. From here, move the left thumbstick to the right until there's clear ground above you. Move the left thumbstick up and then jump, and you'll pull yourself up onto the cliff here. Grab the ELIXIR OF SPIRITUAL LIFE from the chest here and then read the note. Nothing to fancy, it just explains that you can look around with the right thumbstick. Doesn't help much unless you're aiming with your bow later on. Wall run up the wall opposite the chest and after grabbing on the ledge, pull yourself up and proceed forward. Once you come across the tree here, you'll see some crows that can be killed for small yellow essence. It's nearly impossible to kill them with a melee attack, so try and jump and use your shuriken. Run on the fallen tree and follow the branch that leads left onto the next cliff. Keep moving forward before you get ambushed by two brown ninja. Take them out, and then read the note that is on the wall o---BROWN NINJA-----------------------------------------------------------o ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These ninja are pushovers in this game, too bad they're only in this chap- ter though, because later, you'll wish ALL the enemies were as easy as they are. First off, they have only one move, which is a 2-3 combo slash. It doesn't do more than a small speck of damage on your health meter, but if there are a lot of them, they can deal some serious damage. However, when you're fighting these guys, holding the left trigger will make you invul- nerable against these guys. Any combo can take them out realy, XXY, XXX, XXX->X - anything will kill them if your consistent with your strikes. My combo is usually XYXY which enables a one hit kill combo, it's not bad. You can chain some combos on these guys if you want, like: XYXBY, but other wise, it's your choice on how to take these guys on. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o-----------------------------------------------------------BROWN NINJA---o to your right. It explains how to wall run - yeah that's right. Get back a little ways, and face the right wall diagonally. You might have to use the right thumbstick to position yourself or the right trigger if you can't find another way. Afterwards, run towards the wall and jump. Hold "A" as you run along the wall, and until you make it safely on the otherside. For other wall runs, you can press "A" right again before you land to push off the wall and get a lot more distance - you'll need this later in the game. Once you reach this side, kick open the chest for a GREAT SPIRIT ELIXIR - you'll be glad to know this thing heals your life completely, no matter how low it is. You see that crow sitting on the branch? Well, kill it if you can, other- wise it'll fly off when you get to close. To get to the other side, you're going to have to jump at the branch. When you do, you'll grab on and start swinging around in circles. At this point, you're going to have to press jump when your feet are facing the direction where you want to go. When they are, press "A" and you'll leap safely over to the other side.
