A. Introduction (10/19/05 last update)
******
Okay, well my name is Jennifer Wilde aka J_Lionheart on gamespot and gamefaqs.
I don't tell people that I'm a girl on most forums because it's easier that
way. First, a bit about myself. My whole family is full of basketball junkies.
I grew up in a house full of men (2 younger brothers, 1 elder brother, and my
dad--and my mother travels a lot), so I'm a bit of a tomboy. I've watched
basketball with my friend Rory (who's helping with this FAQ) and my brothers
Darien, Justin and Brett for as long as I can remember. I'm an 18 year old
college freshman at UIUC. ^_^ I'm a Basketball
junkie as you can tell. I follow College, NBA and (a little) European b-ball,
and my favorite player in the NBA is Kobe Bryant (so awesome). My favorite NBA
team is the Lakers (although I live in Chicago), and my favorite college team
is the Peacocks (my favorite college players are Keydren Clark, Juan Mendez,
Paul Davis, Jose Juan Barrea, and Ike Diogu who are all going to be a stars
in the NBA one day). Well, thats all I have to say. I might add more in future
updates but that's it. ^_^
******
My name is Rory Trotter, and I'm the other person working on the FAQ. I don't
really post on the forums, but I love reading the debates and discussions that
Jenn and others have on the 2k forums. Anyway, I'm helping Jenn rate the
players and we're both using the same forumulas and methods so they should be
pretty consistent throughout the board. Anyway, about me... I'm 19 years old,
I attend University of Illinois. I played on my highschools varsity basketball
team the last 2 years of hs,and I've loved basketball my whole life.
My favorite team is also the Lakers, although I love the Suns just as much (I'm
a new"bandwagon" sunsfan, but I've been a Laker fan forever).My favorite
college team is U of I (no suprise), but I'm not a big college b-ball fan.
I love the NBA though and I love watching old games from the 80's. My favorite
NBA player of all time is Oscar Robertson, although both me and my friend Darien
(Jennifers older brother) were once huge Gugliottta fans in the early 90's
(he was the primary offensive option on a team with Garnett and Marbury).
Okay, so I'm done. Laterz.

B. Purpose of this FAQ (10/29/05 last update)

The purpose of this FAQ is because I noticed the need to update the roster
on my the NBA games before the season starts since there is a period of
about 4 months (sometimes more) in between the draft and the time the
game comes out, and even when they bring out the game they get the rookies
all wrong (Lebron James was rated a 78 overall in 2k4, and he's a top 10
player in the NBA today).
The second purpose of this FAQ is to rate players in the game that are
under/over rated or need to be changed. To determine the players ratings,we'll
be using NBA.com,82games.com,basketball-reference.com, basketballreference.com
(different sites), draftcity.com, nbadraft.com, and a few others.
The fourth and final purpose of this FAQ is to do the ratings of former, non
legend NBA players and to take request on former NBA players, street players,
or anyone else that anyone wants to request via e-mail or the forums or that
we can think up.Yeah,we know you want to remaked the 72-10 bulls, and we'll be
covering that team and many others. :)

D. What we look at when doing the ratings (12/22/05 last update)
*******************************************************************************

Position: We look at the position. If a scout say that a player has "unreal
speed" and is talking about a center, it probably isn't higher than an 80 TOPS.
Depending on what position a player plays, what a scout says can have different
meanings. We will assume that anything said about a player is in comparison to
other players at his position when reading scouting reports, unless otherwise
stated.

Overall:While the hidden ratings do effect player overalls,we will occasionally
raise a players overall slightly higher if the overall is clearly too low for
the stats they are putting up to make up for the lack of overall points that
they have in the hidden, unchangable ratings of clutch offense, clutch defense,
and dunk range. We will also raise and overall higher if after every player on a
team is rated the teams overall is still sub par or too high (the sonics are a
great example of how the team is underrated despite an accurate rating of all of
the players stats).
*******************************************************************************
Close: We will look at the percentage of a players shots attempted inside and
from close range as well as the number of points they get from close range as
well as there effective field goal percentage and field goal percentage.
We will NOT take into account the percentage of their shots that they are
assisted on when rating close shot. That will effect handles and speed.
Medium: We will look at the percentage of a players shots attempted from mid
range as well as the number of points they get from midrange/jumpshots as well
as there effective field goal percentage and field goal percentage. We will NOT
take into account the percentage of their shots that they are assisted on when
rating the medium range shot. That will effect handles and speed.
3 Point: This is simple. The rating will be based on 3 point percentage, 3
pointers made, and 3 pointers attempted. Free Throw: This rating will be based
on the end of year ft% for current players, the career ft% for legends players,
and the end of year collegiate ft% for incoming players. In the case of former
players, it will be based on career for players we are rating over a career,
and for just a single season on players being built for one team (ie Stever
Kerr in the 72-10 Bulls).
Layup: This will be based on the players points scored
inside, as well as free throw attempts per game (NOT 48 minutes--this stat has
guys like Ben Gordon looking like superstars), percentages up close, and total
points scored in the paint.Dunk:Frequency dunked, completion percentage of dunk,
slam dunk competitions (recent),points scored off of dunks and in this case and
this case only--yes--hype. Ball Handling: This stat will be based off of
percentage of assisted shots scored on (a low number of assisted% will mean
higher handles), as well as ppg or perhaps more accurately--double team
frequency since a guy that is constantly being double teamed will frequently
HAVE to be assisted more in order to find a way to score (i.e James, Bryant,
Pierce etc.).
Passing: This will be based off of passer rating (82games.com),assist per game,
turnovers per game, assist to bad pass ratio, pass to turnover ratio, and to a
small extent assist per 48 minutes (for the benefit of good PG's who getlimited
minutes because they can't do much else outside of passing). Off Low Post:
Points scored up close and in the paint as well as field goal percentage in the
paint.
Def Low Post: Points surrendered in the paint as well as field goal percentage.
Position will be taken into account.
Blocking: BPG and Blocks per 48 minutes (Unlike rebounds and steals, this per 48
minute stat normally translates a little better to actual minutes played).
Stealing: Steals per game.
*******************************************************************************
Offensive Rebounding:RPG and RP48 Minutes
Defensive Rebounding:RPG and RP48 minutes
Speed: Asssisted shot%, position, hype, and how fast
they move with and without the ball in real life.
Stamina:Minutes per game is the best way to do this, though bench players willbe
looked at on a case by case basis and team needs and roles will be taken into
account.
*******************************************************************************
Durability:Games played over the past 3 years and the ammount of times the
player is injured per year.
Offensive Awareness: Passer rating, ppg, and TPG.Guys with over 25ppg
automatically get 95 off awareness if they are current, former or legend NBA
players.Defensive Awareness: Defensive accolades (first team/second team all
defense, DPOY)as well as the number of points a player gives up per game and per
100 possesions at there respective position, as well as there defensive rating
in comparison with the league average.

Keep in mind that hidden rating do affect overalls(Kobe's hidden ratings
raise him almost 3 overall points) but they can't be changed.

Med Tendency 65 (Down from 70)
3pt Tendency 5 (Up from 3)
Drive Tendency 45
Dunk Tendency 75 (Down from 80)

We Say:
Kevin Garenett is probably the second most complete player in the history of
the game sans the big O. Never before has there been a player that can score,
rebound, passand defend at the levels that Garnett can packaged into one.
Only fate would have it that Garnett was never able to play with a group of
players as gifted as big man equals Duncan, Shaq and Kareem.

Tim Duncan: Overall 98 (Down from 99)
Close: 97
Medium: 70 (Down from 75)
3 Point: 56 (Down from 59)

Med Tendency 60 (Down from 70)
3pt Tendency 3 (Up from 2)
Drive Tendency 40
Dunk Tendency 80

We Say:
He hasn't put up a gaudy stat line in several years and he probably never
will again, but there's no ignoring the fact that he's made 1st or second
team all NBA every year of his career and first or second team all defense
every year since he's been in the league. 3 NBA titles, 3 finals MVP's... this
guy's talent level is astronomical.

Kobe Bryant: Overall 98 (Up from 97)
Close: 97 (Down from 99)
Medium: 97 (up from 92)
3 Point: 78 (Down from 79)

Dunk Tendency 70

We Say:
It's difficult to say what seperates Kobe Bryant from other elite guards
Tracy McGrady, Paul Pierce, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Lebron James and
recently Dwayne Wade if not his championship rings, since statistically he
doesn't stand out from all of these players in any meaningful way, but yet
on a purely talent based level Kobe is undoubtedly the best guard in the
league today. With the ability to do EVERYTHING on the court, the only
thing of any question now is where on the top 10 players ever list he'll
fall when he retires.

Allen Iverson: Overall 98 (Up from 96)

3pt Tendency 55 (Up from 50)
Drive Tendency 99
Dunk Tendency 5

We Say:
Maybe the most prolific scorer ever not named Michael Jordan, the 6 foot
tall former MVP is pound for pound the best player in the league. He's
also the quickest and the fastest, but at 30 the question is for how
much longer will this be the case?

Lebron James: Overall 96 (Down from 97)
Close: 99
Medium: 89 (Down from 91)
3 Point: 80

We Say:
20,5 and 5 rookie season? Check. Record equalling 27, 7 and 7 sophomore season?
Check again. 20 years old and on pace to break every past, present and future
guards career totals (yes even those of "the GOAT" himself) if he can play till
he's in his mid 30's? Check. All that said, the christening of Lebron as the
greatest player to ever play the game may be a little premature since he still
can't shoot or play defense all that well (from an elite standpoint), but I'll
be the first one to say that before it's all done I think Lebron will pass them
all.

Dwyane Wade: 96 (Down from 97)
Close: 97 (Down from 99)
Medium: 83 (Down from 88)
3 Point: 66 (Down from 74)

Dunk Tendency 65

We Say:
We said before that he wasn't, but to be absolutely fair, Dwayne Wade
is now a top 10 player in the NBA...maybe top 5. He still can't shoot
a medium range j (his bysmal .389 efg% from jumpers last year is
now even worse at .370 on a much higher percentage of assisted shots),
he is still an awful 3 point shooter (although he shoots more), but
yet and still despite these deficiencies the rest of his game is just
so tight that it just doesn't matter. This guy is the best since
Bryant, it just so happens that he's in a league more star studded
and talent filled than any other time in the history of the game.
Can he stand out?

Paul Pierce: Overall: 95 (Down from 94)
Close: 97

Med Tendency 85
3pt Tendency 55 (Up from 50)
Drive Tendency 85
Dunk Tendency 55

We Say:
Paul Pierce just might be top 5 in the NBA in scoring this year if he
stays in Boston. There isn't anyone else not named Ricky Davis to help
him. If Boston could just make the playoffs... he might even be an MVP
candidate. A top 5-7 swingman in the game. Is having a career year this
year.

Elton Brand: Overall 94 (Up from 91)
Close: 99
Medium: 76 (Up from 73)

Drive Tendency 40
Dunk Tendency 75

We Say:
This is not the same Point Guard that was once one of the most valuable
He's having an MVP type of year. At long last, Brand may have broken
into the elite three PF tandem of Garnett, Duncan and Oneal. Personally,
we always thought that Amare would become a top 3 PF before Brand, but
it seems as if the young superstar is capitalizing on Amare's bad
fortune in a big way, inadvertent as it may be. Brand can be mentioned
in the same sentence as any player in the leage right now, and just
might be mentioned with the best of them come the seasons end.

Tracy McGrady: Overall 94 (Down from 96)
Close: 97 (Down from 99)

Dunk Tendency 70

We Say:
Poor Tracy McGrady. If he'd only been drafted a Laker instead of Kobe he
might be a 3 time NBA champion recieving mountains and mountains of accolades
and hype instead of Kobe Bryant. He MAY have anyway. Truthfully, it's hard
to say if McGrady could have won a title had he been given better teamates,
just as it's hard to say if Gervin and Chamberlain could have obtained the
prestige of Jordan and Kareem had they been given the best role players
and coaches of their generation (in their primes) for the better part of
their careers. However, sadly it looks as if McGrady might just share the
fate of those before him: forever to live in the shadow of a player he's
probably just as good as. It's now or never for T-Mac, as these next few
years are probaly the best he'll ever have at winning it all. Sadly, he still
has long odds...

What we say:
Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Allen Iverson, Dwayne
Wade, Paul Pierce, Dirk Nowitzki, Elton Brand, Gilbert Arenas. I just named
the current top 10 players in the NBA and Arenas is in that list, edging
out Tracy McGrady, Jermaine O'neal, Ray Allen, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and
Vince Carter. To be fair, Amare's return will likely spell the end of this
spot for him (and later Brand as well), but right now Arenas has truly
arrived.

We Say: If he was a bit better in the low post offensively and defensively
I'd take this guy over the best of them, but when Tracy McGrady shuts you
down in the playoffs...that said, I still like this guy. A lot.

We Say:
Vinsanity is back. There, I said it. Vince Carter has once again taken his
place among the elite guards of the NBA. With an MVP second half of the
season last year Kobe, T-Mac, Pierce, Allen, McGrady, and Lebron
aren't the only swingmen on the block anymore. After Kobe, Mcgrady, Iverson,
Wade and James, Carter is the best swingman in the NBA right now.
And he might jump a bit more this year... wait no he won't.

We Say:
In some circles "The Man" and in others "Superman", no players has ever been
this DOMINANT before (well, nobody except this guy in the 50's that scored 100
points in a ball game and that guy with the number 23 from the 90's). Call the
Lakers 3-5 years of championship contention Kobe's team if you like, but Shaq
won the MVP's for the titles (ironically the 2 years after the 3rd title Kobe
was the Lakers unquestionable leader, but they didn't win), and he's doing
considerably better now. How much that has to do with who has the better
teammates is debatable, but let me just say this: I would take Shaq at 27 over
Kobe at 27, and Kobe is my favorite player: ever.

We Say:
This is not the same Point Guard that was once one of the most valuable
players in the league. Still good but no longer special, Kidd is still
probably the 3rd or 4th best PG in the league, but as he closes in on
the end of his prime and reaches that time in every players career where
they fall off a cliff, the days of Kidd being a premier player are very
fast nearing their end.

is much more questionable.

We Say:
This man has been through it all. From the NBDL to starting PG for
the Los Angeles Lakers. On sentient alone, you've gotta love this
guy simply because of the blue collar ethic he brings to the table.

G. Acknowledgements/Closing etc.
(10/29/05 last update)

We'd both like to thank everyone who helped us out with their knowledge of the
game, as well as people who have given us insight about players. Foremost, I'd
like to thank the gamefaqs community for the input on this FAQ, since they
opened my eyes to a few players abilities. We'd like to also thank Darien Wilde
(the worlds biggest Gugliotta fan), as well as everyone who was supportive of
the whole project.
