Question for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

Hi Everybody. Im in need of a little help. Im on the level called Abattoir and I'm in the basement where the troops and Chinese people are. Ive killed Grinko and now it just says to protect the troops. I sat in the room with them for upwards of 10 minutes and nothing happens, but as soon as I leave the room an animation comes up and a mercenary shoots all of them and it says I failed the mission. What am I supposed to do here?

The best thing to do would to restart or go into the place were the Chinese men are, and if there is a guard kill him quickly, if not restart.
