Forgive me if this is a silly question or one that has been answered. I have been searching the net all day and I have not found this particular answer. I have printed out a walkthrough - but it does not answer what I am looking for.

I have activated the 2nd water Tower. Goes to a cutscene showing an artbox in the distance on the left and on the right a possible open door into the castle. Then the castle tower with the Big Door opens up. I have tried and tried to go through the gate that is locked (you see a button on the opposite side) and I am not able to get through it. I went back to the water fountain and saved (it saved as the Door is open). Is there anyway to open that gate at this point or do you have to completely backtrack and it opens at another point? I greatly appreciate the response.
