Question for Halo 2

How do I get in shadows? The aliens come out but I can't go in. The only thing I can figure out is how to get on the machine gun on top of it!

I looked at bungie Q&A. They said you can't drive them,

Unless you play as Arbiter.

I don't think you can get into the shadows, I've tried when you go inside that underground road. I've even tried pushing him off but it dosen't let you.

I can shoot with the turrets but I can't drive them. I think you can only drive them in a custom split screen game:(
