Question for Castlevania: Curse of Darkness

Is there a trick to stealing a ceremonial tool from Vassago or Blaze Master other than the directions of locking on and waiting for the purple target? Do they need to be positioned a certain way or my character?

Uppercut them. There's two types of uppercut. One, while blocking, press attack. This is also known as the "strong uppercut". Two, press attack and jump in rapid succession (one after the other real fast), known as the "weak (or quick) uppercut". That presents the ever-sought purple target allowing you to steal. You will have to jump to reach them, though. So, perform either uppercut, then jump and steal.
