What is the little guy for after you die in the grinder mode?

If you are referring to when one of the players mechs' dies and they are transformed to just the pilot, who can only walk around the level and look at stuff then, the "little" guy is basically just spectator mode. As in you are now watching the battle. I think it adds a somewhat neccessary and interesting P.O.V.
