How to Remove your Xbox 360 Hard Drive

This article will show you how to remove the hard drives of different Xbox 360 models.

Xbox 360 (Original)



Attaching the hard drive


  1. If your Xbox 360 didn't come with a hard drive, you may need to remove the hard drive bay cover that looks like the one below. You just need to press the only button then slowly lift the cover

  2. Place the hard drive with its rear end first. Aim the hard drive's jack on the console's hard drive slot.

  3. When it is aligned, push it down gently until you hear a click.

  4. Turn on your Xbox and check if the new hard drive is detected.




Removing the hard drive


  1. Turn off your console (obviously)

  2. Press the release button on the hard drive until you hear a click.

  3. Gently lift the hard drive in a tilting position, with its other end as the apex.

Xbox 360 S


The Xbox 360 S has an internal 4GB flash memory which can't be removed. Some versions of this console can be bought with or without a hard drive.

Adding a hard drive


  1. Turn off your console (obviously)

  2. Position the console horizontally, with the disc tray on your left.

  3. Find the hard drive cover and slide the release mechanism towards the front of the console while gently pulling the door open.

  4. Insert the hard drive to the slot and press firmly until you hear a click.

  5. Return the cover and lock it in place.




Removing a hard drive


  1. Turn off your console (obviously)

  2. Position the console horizontally, with the disc tray on your left.

  3. Find the hard drive cover and slide the release mechanism towards the front of the console while gently pulling the door open.

  4. Pull the tab of the hard drive to remove it.

Xbox 360 E
