Introduction
Ticket to Ride is the PC/Console interpretation of the German-style board game created by Alan R. Moon, which is also called Ticket to Ride, and offers gamers a digital take on what has become a classic board game among the tabletop gamer population.
In Ticket to Ride the players must draw three Route Cards and retain at least two of them, and then starting with five cards they must draw from the deck to acquire the different colored cards that they need to either complete their routes or score enough rail points to win the game. A number of strategies and approaches are dominant in the game so that it offers nearly endless challenges, especially during multi-player games in which there are three or more players.
Created by Next Level Games for Playful Entertainment, the digital version of Ticket to Ride was released on Windows PC, MAC, and the Xbox 360 as a LIVE Arcade title. Launched on 25 June 2008 on the Microsoft LIVE Network, the base version of the game, Ticket to Ride, is priced at 800 Microsoft Points (MSP), as a single and multi-player game. While its single-player game play is engaging and fun, it is the multi-player side of the game that has caught the imagination of gamers on LIVE.
In rapid succession two expansions were released for the LIVE version of the game, starting with Ticket to Ride: Europe on 1 August 2008, available on LIVE as DLC for 600 MSP, and for PC and MAC for $4.99 each. The European expansion to the game introduced new features, most notably “Tunnel Routes” that required the player to player to use more train cards, and “Ferry Routes” that pass over water and require the player to use Engine Cards in addition to the train cards.
The European expansion was quickly followed by Ticket to Ride: 1910 USA, which was released on 17 September and cost 400 MSP and $1.99 respectively, offering players a reinterpreted map of the USA to play on that included new routes and a different focus and strategy.
While there were two additional expansions released for PC and MAC, The Legendary Asia expansion, and the Switzerland expansion, these have not been released for Xbox LIVE and may not be.
