Does the rival in classic mode come back stronger?

In super smash bros for wii you in classic mode I know the game says you have a rival that gets stronger as they win battles you should fight them in their stronger form to get more rewards. I don't understand this. I usually fight the rival and win and then they dissappear for the rest of classic mode and I never see them again. Where is their stronger form, are they supposed to defeat me to get stronger? Do I let them win? I have played the mode up to level 9 and still have never seen a rival come back stronger

I think what they mean is the more you keep from fighting them, the stronger they get.
