1.2 About the Guide
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
This guide is for those who wish to know the lyrics, translation, and
pronunciation of the Latin lyrics of the theme song for the Super Smash
Brothers Brawl game. For once Nintendo has added some culture to a game, but
unfortunately in this modern world, most people are no longer educated in
either Greek or Latin. However, this guide will give those people who do not
know Latin the knowledge to sing along to one of my favorite video game songs
ever.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.2.1-----------------------------------------------------------Classical Latin
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*The Classical Latin version is a presentation of the lyrics from the Roman
Empire era*

During this period, Latin had no punctuation, stanzas, or spaces between words
and length of certain syllables were presented with macrons. I have capitalized
the beginning and added a period to the end just for clarity.

Lyrics:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.2.2------------------------------------------------------------Medieval Latin
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Ever since the rise of Christianity, Italian has influenced Latin in
pronunciation, spelling, and punctuation*

Latin is typically presented in this style and continues to be the standard
presentation of all verses written in Latin in the modern era.

Lyrics:
Audi famam illius
Solus in hostes ruit
Et patriam servavit.

Audi famam illius
Cucurrit quaeque
Tetigit destruens.

Audi famam illius.
Audi famam illius.

Spes omnibus mihi quoque.
Terror omnibus mihi quoque.

Ille iuxta me.
Ille iuxta me.

Socii sunt mihi
Qui olim viri fortes
Rivalesque erant.

Saeve certando
Pugnandoque
Splendor crescit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.2.3--------------------------------------------------------Strict Translation
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*This translation keeps the structure of the Latin syntax and while it may not
make sense, is the best way to preserve the language's beauty. Some words such
as "famam" have many different meanings and so to add a little diversity I vary
the word*

Latin: English:
Audi famam illius I heard a reputation of one
Solus in hostes ruit He alone charged into enemies
Et patriam servavit. And protected the fatherland.

Audi famam illius I heard the fame of this one
Cucurrit quaeque He hastened and those which
Tetigit destruens. He touched he was destroying.

Audi famam illius. I heard repute of this.
Audi famam illius. I harkened the news of this one.

Spes omnibus mihi quoque. Hope for all likewise for me.
Terror omnibus mihi quoque. Terror for all likewise for me.

Ille iuxta me. He next to me.
Ille iuxta me. He like I.

Socii sunt mihi I have allies
Qui olim viri fortes Who once powerful men
Rivalesque erant. And who were once rivals.

Saeve certando Through striving savagely
Pugnandoque And through fighting
Splendor crescit. Splendor ascends.

                                  -Translation by Evan T. Delaney

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.2.4---------------------------------------------------------Loose Translation
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*This translation allows a more easier understanding of the Latin through
English syntax rather than Latin syntax*

Latin: English:
Audi famam illius I heard about a rumor of this one
Solus in hostes ruit About one who rushed into enemies alone
Et patriam servavit. And saved the world.

Audi famam illius I heard about his reputation
Cucurrit quaeque How he hastened destroying everything
Tetigit destruens. Which he touched.

Audi famam illius. I heard about the legend of this one.
Audi famam illius. I heralded his news.

Spes omnibus mihi quoque. He gave hope for all and likewise for me.
Terror omnibus mihi quoque. And gave terror for all and likewise for me.

Ille iuxta me. He approached towards me.
Ille iuxta me. He was now next to me.

Socii sunt mihi I now have allies
Qui olim viri fortes Some who were once heroic men
Rivalesque erant. And others who were once rivals.

Saeve certando However through striving
Pugnandoque And fighting fiercely
Splendor crescit. Our grandeur grew.

                                  -Translation by Evan T. Delaney

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.2.5------------------------------------------------------Nintendo Translation
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Upon completion of the Subspace Emissary, the lyrics are revealed alongside a
translation provided by Taro Yamashita. It is extremely loose but still loosely
holds the meaning of the Latin while providing easier comprehension in English.
Thanks goes to Pat Richardson and Krista Cervantes for providing me with this
translation.*

Latin: English:
Audi famam illius I've heard legends of that person
Solus in hostes ruit How he plunged into enemy territory
Et patriam servavit. To save his homeland.

Audi famam illius I've heard legends of that person
Cucurrit quaeque How he traveled the breadth of the land
Tetigit destruens. Reducing all he touched to rubble.

Audi famam illius. I've heard legends of that person.
Audi famam illius. I've heard legends of that person.

Spes omnibus, mihi quoque. Revered by many -- I too, revere him.
Terror omnibus, mihi quoque. Feared by many -- I too, fear him.

Ille iuxta me. Now that person stands at my side.
Ille iuxta me. Now that person stands at my side.

Socii sunt mihi Now my friends are with me
Qui olim viri fortes Some of them once heroes
Rivalesque erant. Some, my mortal enemies.

Saeve certando And as we face each other in battle,
Pugnandoque Locked in combat
Splendor crescit. We shine ever brighter.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.2.6-------------------------------------------------------------Pronunciation
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*This gives a person the ability to pronounce the Latin correctly*

The pronunciation of the Latin is different for Classical Latin and Medieval
Latin. The lyrics of the theme song are sung with Medieval Latin pronunciation.
However I will provide both pronunciations to allow people to sing it as it was
sung in the times of the Roman Empire and now in modern times. Pronounce the
words as if you were sounding them out in English. Some words I've used
included in the pronunciation guide for better clarification. Hopefully by
listening to the opening song and these pronunciations, it will be easy to
figure out the words.

English pronounciation guide:
ou - as in "foul" oh - as in "so" ah - as in "saw"
ee - as in "see" eye - as in "sigh" eh - as in "bed"
oo - as in "moose" ay - as in "say"

Classical Latin:
Audi famam illius Ou-dee fah-mahm il-lee-us
Solus in hostes ruit Soh-loos in hohs-tays roo-it
Et patriam servavit. Et pah-tree-ahm ser-wah-weet

Audi famam illius Ou-dee fah-mahm il-lee-us
Cucurrit quaeque Coo-coor-rit kweye-kway
Tetigit destruens. Tay-tee-git des-troo-ens

Audi famam illius. Ou-dee fah-mahm il-lee-us

Splendor crescit. Splen-dohr krays-kit

Medieval Latin (how it is sung in the main theme):
Audi famam illius Ou-dee fah-mahm il-lee-us
Solus in hostes ruit Soh-loos in hohs-tays roo-it

III. FAQ
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Q: Why did you make this...it seems rather pointless?
A: Well, one of my majors in college is Classics and thought it would be a
good usage of my major, which may seem pointless to most. Besides this,
this theme song is so awesome, I just had to do it. Some people may like
to know the lyrics, the translation, and the pronunciation so they can
sing along. Also, this theme sings appears greatly throughout the entire
game, so if I chose a song to emphasize, it was to be this one.

2. Q: How did you learn about Latin; how hard is it to learn; etc?
A: I took an intensive Latin course in my college and I could translate all
Latin after the completion of the course. It was very hard and unless you
are good at languages, it may not prove fun. It is unlike most languages
for it has a declension system that allows for no necessary word order.
This makes Latin a puzzle but fun at the same time when the verb appears
four lines down or the direct object is at the beginning of the sentence.
Though I will say Latin is easier to learn and master than Greek. I have
read works of Ovid, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas in Latin, and have
muddled in Horace, Catalus, Cicero, and Caesar. The only nice thing about
Latin is that you do not need to speak or converse it, but unfortunately
to figure out the lyrics of a poem, opera, etc. you need to have an ear.

3. Q: Did you translate these lyrics?
A: Yes, these translations are my work and I am still looking for the
Nintendo translation of this song, so if anyone could find it for me,
      much appreciated.

4. Q: Could I have a recording of this song?
A: Sure. There is one provided on the official SSBM website:
      http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/music/music10.html

There is also one provided on Youtube with the video of the opening:

IV. EMAILS AND COMMENTS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
***From Pat Richardson aka smiles4rock***

Dear Yoh of Izumo,
I have read your guide on gamefaqs.com about the SSBB main theme, and I noticed
you were asking for the Nintendo translation. It can be found after completing
adventure mode, but here it is, if you want it:

I've heard legends of that person.
How he plunged into enemy territory
How he saved his homeland.

I've heard legends of that person.
How he traveled the breadth of the land, reducing all he touched to rubble.

I've heard legends of that person.
I've heard legends of that person.

Revered by many - I too revere him.
Feared by many - I too fear him.

Now that person
Stands at my side.

Now that person stands at my side.
Now my friends are with me.
Some of them were once heroes
Some, my mortal enemies.

And as we face each other in battle, locked in combat
We shine ever brighter.

I sure hope this will help with your guide!
                                                        Sincerely,
                                                             smiles4rock

My response:
Thank you much.

***From Krista Cervantes***

Q: Did you translate these lyrics?
A: Yes, these translations are my work and I am still looking for the
Nintendo translation of this song, so if anyone could find it for me,
      much appreciated.

The Nintendo translation is shown when you finish the Subspace Emissary, the
song plays while the lyrics flash on the screen, this is what I got:

---------------------

Audi famam illius

I've heard legends of that person
Solus in hostes ruit
how he plunged into enemy territory
Et patriam servavit.
to save his homeland.

Audi famam illius
I've heard legends of that person
Cucurrit quaeque tetigit destruens.
how he travelled the breadth of the land reducing all he touched to rubble.

Audi famam illius.
I've heard legends of that person.
Audi famam illius.
I've heard legends of that person.

Spes omnibus mihi quoque.
Revered by many-- I too, revere him.
Terror omnibus mihi quoque.
Feared by many-- I too, fear him.

Ille
Now that person
iuxta me.
stands at by my side.
Ille iuxta me.
Now that person stands at by my side.
Socii sunt mihi
Now my friends are with me
Qui olim viri fortes
some of them once heroes
Rivalesque erant.
some, my mortal enemies.

Saeve certando pugnandoque
And as we face each other in battle, locked in combat
Splendor crescit.
we shine ever brighter.

Aaaand... I know quite a few people who sing along with it. Nice guide btw.

My response: Thank you, this helps a lot.

ever.

Those involved in the making of the theme song - for making a great theme song
that will be classic for the ages.

Maybe some will find this lyrics guide useful, other may not. But I must say,
Latin is one of those few languages that add mysticism and power to music.
