1. About this Guide
============================
Greetings wandoliers! This guide is to help out with locating those essences
for completing scrolls for furniture, items and paints. This guide is NOT a
walk through or quest item location guide. This guide does NOT go over rewards
of quests or contents of chests, even if they do contain essences as they are
once off rewards only. Please do not email questions or answers about where to
find figurines, flowers, scrolls, treasure or armour.

2. What are Essences?
============================
Essences are resources that can be found in all sorts of places. They are
large, cartoony and exaggerated looking things and necessary for completing
scrolls for more furniture, items and paints. When you collect enough
essences to complete a scroll, a shining scroll icon will appear over Lyndsay's
head. Talk to her to use up your collected essences and gain these new items.
Don't know what essences you need for your scroll? Open the scroll menu, choose
the scroll in question and hover your pointer over an essence. A pop-up window
with the name of the essence will appear.
Essences are also used to power up your wand if you run out of mana. Mana is
needed for building and painting. Each essence can be transmuted into mana. The
exchange rate of each essence differs. To transmute essences, talk to Lyndsay
and choose the right option that has two arrows and says "Transmute". There you
can choose the essence and how many to transmute.

3. Collecting Essences
=============================
There are many ways to collect essences. All essences will home on you for
easy collection. This section covers the basic game mechanics on finding them.
REMEMBER: If you cannot find trees, mining or fishing spots, press 1 on the Wii
Remote or go to your menu and get the map out.
Tree Shaking
------------
Point at a tree trunk with the Wii Remote and hold the B button. While holding
the B button, shake the Wii Remote to shake the tree. Any essences and mana in
its branches will fall to the ground. Watering a tree or giving the tree time
while you are on the island will regrow its essences.
Wood Chopping (gathering wood and dead wood)
--------------------------------------------
When standing near a tall, full grown tree, two options are available at the
bottom of the screen. The left is water the tree and the right is to chop wood.
Point at the Chop button and press A to enter chop mode. Swing the Wii Remote
like an axe to chop at the trunk.
Chopping will give you wood essences but if you chop at the tree too much, it
will begin to wither. A sign of a withering tree is a puff of smoke and a
dull browning of the trunk and leaves. To save the tree, stop swinging the Wii
remote and leave chop mode by pressing the B button, then water the tree till
it is green again.
If you want to destroy the tree, keep chopping away once it begins withering.
It will disappear in a puff of smoke and leave you with a stump. You are then
given the option of stomping on the stump. Stomping gives you dead wood
essences and leaves a hole in the ground for you to plant a new tree.
Plantable essences are apples, bananas, cherries, cherry blossoms, oranges,
pears, coconuts, pineapples, rockets, music notes, stars and eyeballs. Once you
choose an essence from your collection for planting, a sapling will appear and
requires water and TLC to grow. Keep watering the sapling till it changes to a
small tree, then keep watering again till it grows to a large tree. Watering a
large tree recently shaken of its essences will cause them to regrow.
Prospecting or Treasure Hunting
-------------------------------
Available once you receive the prospector (looks like a metal detector) from
Barney on Capital Island. This option is selectable from the green diamond in
the top right corner of your screen. Hover your Wii pointer over the green
diamond and select the gold coloured prospector at the bottom of the list
to begin this mode.
This mini-game of sorts, plays out like "Hot and Cold". As you get closer to
where hidden essences are buried, the tone will beep faster and the colours
of the prospector's waves will change from blue to green to yellow, then orange
and to red. Red means you've found the treasure. Shake the Wii Remote to begin
digging. Alternatively, you can press the A button to begin digging. You will
never find essences on buildable areas.
It is possible to be done prospecting in one spot and immediately find the next
hot spot under your feet.
There is a chance that one of your prospects will strike it rich. These
jackpots either give heaps of a completely different essence or heaps of what
you would ordinarily dig up. I have so far hit four jackpots, receiving at
least 12 aliens in one of them!
Mining
------
Mining can only be done near a wall and where you see a pick embedded in a
small pile of rocks. Stand by the pick and press the A button to begin
mining.
Mining is much like the prospecting mini-game. Walk along the mineable wall
with the control stick. Swinging the Wii Remote causes your character to tap
the wall. How close you are to discovering the hidden essences depends on
the colour of the tap and the pitch of the tap. As you get closer, the pitch
becomes higher and the colour changes from blue to green to yellow, the orange
and to red. Once you've hit the red spot, keep swinging the Wii Remote to keep
chipping at this point in the wall. Essences will pour from this point ONLY AS
you chip away and once your character stops and cheers, it means you need to
search the wall again for that hot spot. So chip like crazy!
Alternatively, if you don't want to swing the Wii Remote to tap, you can press
the C button. Press the A button when you find the hotspot to chip out those
essences.
Pulling Weeds
-------------
Weeds are the little tuffs of grass with fluffy dandelion heads. You can pull
these out of the ground by hovering your pointer on them, holding the B button
and flicking up the Wii Remote. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO STAND NEXT TO THEM TO PULL
WEEDS. Why? Read on.
Pulling a weed gives you a tone and one essence. Pulling a second weed a few
seconds after gives you a slightly higher tone and two essences of a different
variety. Pulling a third gives you an even higher tone and a different essence
and a fourth gives a high tone, a little tune and another different type of
essence.
Completing this weeding sequence produces more valuable or rarer essences. It
may even drop a figurine! Try to find a clump of three easily accessible weeds
and a fourth not too far.
"Be Nice" or "Be Mean"
----------------------
Going up to a Sim THAT IS NOT Buddy or Lyndsay and choosing the "Be Nice"
option gives you Happy essences. Choosing "Be Mean" gives you Sad essences.
As far as I can tell, these options DO NOT affect this character's relationship
with you. So go ahead and be as mean as you like.
Fishing
-------
On every island but Capital Island and Reward Island is at least ONE fishing
spot. To fish, stand next to the bucket and rod and press the A button. The
control stick moves the bait and to pull in your line, quickly flick the Wii
Remote up. To cancel fishing, press the B button.
To fish, move the bait to where you see the white shadows of fish passing.
This indicates where the fish are concentrating. If your bait is in the correct
place, the float will bobble violently and splash. When the float goes
COMPLETELY underwater and makes a glug noise rather than splash, this is when
you quickly flick the Wii Remote to reel in the catch.
Once off adventure things
-------------------------
Opening treasure chests or clam shells (underwater equivalent of treasure
chests) gives you a fixed set of essences.
Completing quests such as painting houses, placing furniture, fixing machines
and convincing Sims gives you essences.
Handing over collectables such as armour, figurines, fish and flowers to the
Sims that request them result in an outpouring of essences.

4. Essences by location
========================
NOTE: Prospecting, mining, weeding and fishing essences will always be fixed
for each island. Essences from trees and interactive items may change depending
on if you changed the native trees and the types of interactive items
available.
This section will cover essences that can be found as you step on the island
for the FIRST time, including items that are already present but require
electricity or gears. Areas are named as they appear on the map.
Some essences will only appear if you watch the ENTIRE animation, example Dead
Wood from warming hands. Some essences appear depending on the outcome of the
ENTIRE animation, example Sad after falling off the mechanical bull ride. Any
animation or continuous animation (eg. DJ-ing) can be cancelled by moving the
control stick.
All essences are ordered according to most common to least. Transmutation
exchange rates from essences to mana are also included.

8.1 Version History

Version 1.01 - Completed 11/12/08
Minor section heading change. Changed Special Island to Reward Island, seeing
as it is your reward. Added additional controls for mining. Added forgotten
items available in Elmira's House the first time you visit. Added Hypnodisc as
a location for 8-Ball, Eyeball and Star. Changed fish and mining locations to
descriptions in alphabet and categories rather than area numbers so you don't
have to scroll back to islands to check. Stuck Television and Television Screen
together in Interactive Item section as they do they the same thing, much like
how I've put all sofas in the same category.
Version 1.00 - Completed 6/12/08
Essences by location, alphabetically, in-game categories and interactive item
completed. Missing possible jackpots on other islands and information of low
probability appearing essences for items. Not certain if aliens are jackpot
only or regular find on The Uncharted Isle. I got plenty in a stream from one
dig while on Spookane and twice on The Uncharted Isle.
