Press 'Start' when you complete a stage and before the points start totaling up. And you will get an extra life. It is only possible to get 9 extra lives.

Unlockables

Unlock Level and Lives Select:
At the Main menu hold down A + B + C + Right on controller 2 and while selecting 'Options' on controller 1.

Unlock Extra Continues:
At the 'Title' screen press Left, Left, B, B, B, C, C, C, Start.

Unlock Final Boss Duel:
In 2-Player mode when you get to the final boss have one player choose 'Yes' and the other 'No' and you will be forced to fight against each other.

Get Bad Ending:
When you first meet Mr X choose to be his right-hand man and then complete the game.
