I got the fishing rod from Colin's mom, but it doesn't appear on my items menu... What's up? How do I get it back?

It should be there when you press up on the control pad thing. Then all you should have to do is set item. If it's not there then try talking to her again to see if you can get it again. If not you may just have to start your game over.
