Help with Jump in Water Temple

I'm in the water temple central room trying to jump to pull gold handles to move staircase. I can only seem to roll - not jump. It doesn't seem to mater if I have Zora gear on or not. I've put iron shoes away so no added weight. I'm lining myself up with the center line in the tiles and running straight to the handle, pressing A. No good. Even if I Z target the handle. Even if I walk it slowly, all I can get the A button to say is "roll" not "jump"
Can anybody help? I'm feeling pretty stupid about this.

Volke answered:

If you are directly facing the staircase, regardless of whether you are upstairs or downstairs, Link isn't going to jump. This is because pulling the gold handles will move the staircase so that it will be facing you, and you will thus be able to use it from where you stand. Instead, head to a gold handle that isn't facing the staircase (meaning if you jump, you'd just jump into the water below if the handle wasn't there) and run towards it. Link should automatically jump (you don't need to press A) and grab onto it, pulling it down and moving the staircase in your direction.
