It depends on what root wall you are referring to.
Some you can smash with a comet dash (Fire melee attack) and some you need to wait for enemies to destroy.
I encountered a glitch once where the enemies didn't smash the root wall after I killed the enemies in the previous area, I restarted the area and it worked properly.

I need help breaking the root wall at the beginning of the game in the temple.. I played spyro gamed but the eternal night is new to me.
