Question for Skylanders Spyro's Adventure

Hello,
My kids just received the game for Christmas. All of a sudden when we place the skylanders on the portal it looks like it's going to recognize the character but then just hangs and nothing happens.

Is this a known issue? What steps do I need to take to get it resolved?
