Contact http://support.activision.com. Try typing in your problem. Something like "Lost USB for Skylanders" or something similar. The website will list possible solutions. There is one entitled "Lost Portal/Champion/Receiver Replacement" that will tell you Activision will not replace a LOST gizmo, apparently they WILL replace a broken one. You can contact them at http://warranty.activision.com to arrange for a replacement. The only reason for needing a second USB is if the first is either lost or broken, or you are wanting to use the USB in a second console. If the gizmo is lost, your are probably screwed. If it is broken and you still have it then you can probably get a replacement. WHO KNOWS what it might cost. SOMETIMEs replacements gizmo's are nearly as expensive as buying the whole thing over again. You might try buying a used one on ebay. Or at a GAMING Store. Sometimes the knockoff gizmos will actually work. I do NOT recommend using knockoff's. But if there is NO OTHER solution available, then you do what you have to do to get the thing going again.

I lost my receiver in a move. I called Activision at 1-310-255-2050. They were very nice and told me they would replace the receiver for $10. I just needed the case number that they gave me. I called on a Sunday and they were there and helped me. I would suggest that route.

My red light on my usb is not coming on when I try to sync with my portal on the wii

No you can not because it is already attached to the portal of power. Plus you can't get the portal separate.

I turn on the wii to play skylanders when I press a to start the screen says cannot find usb even though I have connected the usb in back of the wii,
