To the best of my knowledge, activision has no method for accumulating "stats" on which skylanders are used the most. "Played With" is sort of a personal preference kind of thing. Some people like a particular Skylander because of something within their own personal psyche. Some like certain ones because of the skylander's cute walk, or whatever. I suspect what you are really asking is which skylander is best to use to get through the various levels of the game. Each skylander is different, yet there are some similarities. Some Skylanders SHOOT. Some shoot straight, some LOB the projectile at the enemy. Some SLASH or hit with a mace, sword, or axe. SOME PUNCH.
ALL skylanders become more powerful as they are used.. They "level up" which gives them slightly longer life. There are 10 levels. ALL skylanders can purchase "upgrades" from Persephony, as soon as they accumulate as much treasure, gems, or other booty that is needed. Each upgrade is more expensive than the one below. Each skylander comes with two powers. Each can purchase 8 upgrades.
You can put different hats on your skylanders. They can only wear one hat at a time, but those hats will provide additional capabilities.

So first rule of thumb is level up your skylanders as much as possible. Replay the lower levels over and over until you have all your guys at level 10. Along the way they will collect booty. BUY ALL THE UPGRADES. Make sure everyone is wearing a hat. MULTIPLE skylanders can be wearing the SAME hat. The game isn't that smart.

When it comes to choosing which skylander to use this becomes personal preference.

My own personal preference is "avoid" Skylanders that fight close in. Punchers and hitters tend to get killed the quickest, especially when they are ganged up on in a "boss" fight at the end of the chapter. I prefer shooters. And the faster the better. Spyro, Hex, Cynder, Trigger Happy, all shoot fast and if they are leveled up with all the upgrades they can shoot a LOONNGGG time. Keep one skylander of each element alive at all costs. You never know when you will need one. Some can do things others can't. Prism Break is not very good EXCEPT in the mines. He can break those crystals without bombs or a pick axe.

Speed while walking or flying also makes a HUGE difference. Slow skylanders take a LONG time to travel from one place to another. I generally find that faster skylanders make it easier to get from one place to another before the "timer" runs out.

Which brings me to the NEXT consideration

You will probably find that the "flying" skylanders are the most useful. All can HOVER, which is needed badly at times. Drobot can hover ONLY when you PRESS a button. Most can hover if you let off on the joystick. Flying is incredibly useful for delivering bombs to target before the clock runs out. FLYING skylanders simply cover more ground quicker. They can be a little harder to control in very narrow confines, but you can always drop back into "walking" mode when the need arises. A hovering Flyer is incredibly helpful in the
EMPIRE OF ICE, because everyone else slips into the holes and traps. A hovering flyer CAN make it through when no one else can.

Normally you need a water skylander to cross WATER. A Flying skylander can also cross water.

Some of the hacker, slasher, macer's are very powerful also. LOBBER's can be helpful, when trying to kill an enemy that is ABOVE you. Most of the shooters shoot at the SAME level they are. Most can't seem to shoot UPWARD. A lobber solves this problem.

While all the figures are about the same size, a slight difference in size ON THE SCREEN can be important. Some Skylanders are LARGE HULKING creatures that can't get through small openings. Large can be good when you are pushing a big bomb, but bad when you a trying to squeeze between rocks that are close together. Big can be good when standing toe to toe in a "punching" match.

Some skylanders are very specialized and are VERY useful in certain situations.
ERUPTION is incredibly powerful when you need a FIRE element. STUMP SMASH is great when you need a life element. GILL GRUNT is great when you need a water element.

Don't hesitate to SWITCH skylanders in the middle of a chapter. You can always switch back when the particularly troublesome enemy is gone.

Personal preference makes a HUGE difference. Some people find they can "drive" and "control" certain skylanders easier than others.

Personally, I believe you will find that FLYERS, and FAST SHOOTERS will probably tend to make up your most powerful arsenal, overall.
