How come I can't use the costumes in the book where I got them.In the Bonus mode.

You have to be able to play in the "Explore" mode in order to change characters and costumes. When you start an episode that you have already completed, you will be given a choice whether to play in "Story Mode" or "Explore Mode." You have to have completed all the levels to be offered the option.

If you mean explore mode you have to hold down the bottom to switch characters for about 3 seconds.
