To get the gas mask, you need to get past renagade fortress. Do the thing where you throw the switch to open the door, get in the door before it closes, and go in. Jump off the cliff, and if you notice the 2 stink monsters, it won't matter. Just run up the road. Avoid getting hit by the giant rocks and renagade balls. When you get to the end of the road, you should see a village. Take some time looking through the village, as there are idols and shamen hidden around. After grabbing those things and filling your life, go to the hole that is in the ground in the middle of the village. Jump in, and then you have to fight all these renagades that are on pillars. It's pretty easy, all you need is you shield. Punch the pillars down, take out the guys running around on the ground, and you win! Then the room in the back will open, and inside is a gasmask!
