Maelstrom swashbuckling fight, dead end

In the Maelstrom part of the game, after your character boards the second ship, goes downstairs (at the direction of the "arrow"), after a bit more fighting, the arrow appears and points you sort of toward a door, but there is no entry. We can't figure out where we are supposed to go from here. I'm just a non-gaming savvy Dad trying to help his kid. Any help? Thanks.

When you start the Maelstrom level, you need to kill some pirates, then an arrow will show up. It would lead to one of your crewmates. And if they die, you need to start again from the beginning of the level. After you help the first one, take the rope that will eventually show up and help your second crewmate. After this, you have to help I think two more. Then you play as Sparrow then Will Turner.

When when you arrive on the 2nd ship (after you swing across on the rope) you walk right and then down the staircase to continue the fight. When the 2nd arrow calling for help appears, you go BACK UP THE STAIRS and to the right, fighting some more crew members on the upper deck. Then a third arrow appears, and you will have to return back down the stairs.
