My son got the Wii Pirate game but can't get Jack off the steps outside the cell. He has tried everything & I have too. Wondering if disk might be bad or is there something that he or I have missed.

Just smash the box open by swiping at it with the sword (swing the remote) the box will smash and you'll get past.
Go to the end of the stairs and there is a box that stops you from getting past. Go to the box and shake the wii remote untill it breaks. I had the same problem.
