When I swing a forehand the game registers it as a backhand and when I swing backhand it registers as a forehand. I am swinging with my right hand. I checked that the game is set on right hand. It was set to "Manual". When I changed it to "Normal" it worked fine.

Well the fact that you've got it working now makes it fine, but are you sure you were holding the wiimote the right way? If not then that might've been your problem.
