Thats because you only play as the 1 mii on single player but in two player or online you can choose your mii character. I hoped this helped.

Only in multiplayer you can chose but in sigls you must play with the one on your lisns

In single player mode, you can only play with the mii that's on the license. You can change the license's mii whenever you want, on the settings menu. However, in multiplayer mode, you and the others can choose the mii that they desire, without having to change the license information. Hope this helps!
