I am not sure how to get past this level.
My son and I keep flying our ships into stuff and can't get past the shields.

You must be on the trench run. When you get to one of the shields there are lighted up red lines running away from the shields. You will need the purple torpideo to destory the targets that glow purple. One per target destory them all and the shield will fall. You might have to shoot the wall where the shield was.
