These symbols represent the hostages in all Hero levels. Hostages have been taken by the villains in areas all over Arkham City and you must defeat the villains that are holding the innocent civilians hostage. Th happy faces are levels where you have saved a hostage and the sad faces are where you haven't saved the hostage.
