The nursery will sometimes give hints as to which trees produce the most wood, pinecone and rainbow fruit are best. You do have to harvest fruit trees before they bear fruit otherwise they lock into a growing cycle which could take a few Sanriotown years before you can cut them down. It's advisable that you save up and upgrade the garden and nursery early on, if you do this you can get access to better seeds and have a larger garden to plant them in therefore producing more wood.
