Question for Animal Crossing: City Folk

Hi I have been seeing these gold stars on the ground, are you meant to pick them up cos it's not letting me or do they actually mean nothing at all, I'm new to the game by the way, 3 days.

The stars are meant to be dug up with a shovel (bought at the store, Nook's Cranny: will only be sold some days). Walk up to the star, shovel equipped in your hands, and press A. It will reveal either a fossil or a gyroid. Fossils can be brought to the museum for identification by Blathers, and then sold to Nook or donated to the museum for show. Gyroids can be sold, or given to Brewster, the owner of the coffee shop in the museum's basement. You will need to first make a friendship with him by buying coffee daily, and then when you have gyroids in your pockets, he will ask you if he can hold on to them for you.
