Play as Luigi,Yellow Toad or Blue Toad
First put multiplayer and select any characrer for 2P.Select any stage you want.Press the A button on controller 1 so that Mario gets traped inside a bubble.Then play as the character you selected for 2P but don´t pop the bubble so Mario does not come out.
