When you have the spider ball, return to the Chozo astronomy lab in Skytown, Elysia. It is at this location that you get into a light up bomb thing as a morph ball, and magnifying lenses move to a position and a probe is sent into the sky that gives you maps. If you enter and use ALL the bomb things one at a time you will have maps for ALL of the planets and positions of upgrades. They will appear as a sphere and when they are acquired they will become an X.
