This isn't really important but it has helped me a lot. Probably most people already know it, but for you newbies, here is a way to get a temporary boost. If you are going off a ramp in any track, right when your player touches the ramp, shake your wii controller. Your player will do a flip or spin and when it hits the ground it will get a temporary boost. Also you may not know how to do a wheelie. Just shake you wii remote when you are on the ground. One thing to remember is that you CANNOT turn when you are doing a wheelie.
I figured this out when I was about to fall off the world in Wario's Gold Mine. When you get to the part of the track where the little cars full of gold are traveling, follow the purple track. You will go into a little tan colored tube where there is a rainbow pad and a couple QMQs. After beig on there for a few seconds you will pop out the other side and probably be in first to fifth place.
If you have Toad, Koopa Troopa, or Dry Bones and the Magikriuser you go fast and get good place

For the majority of courses, use the Bowser Bike or Mach Bike for their excellent speed and cornering. For Shy Guy Beach, use the Magikruser. For any easy course like Mario and Luigi Circuit, use the Spear.
You can only dodge a spiny shell (an item used to slow down the person in first place) under certain circumstances.
1.) Riding through a cannon.
Cannons are only on certain parts of certain courses. You'll need to be lucky to successfully use this method.
2.) Using a mushroom/golden mushroom.
This can be hard to do because you cannot get any mushrooms in first place and any items you save up can be taken away by a POW block or some lightning. You have to use your mushroom as soon as the shell is in your sight. If you're really, really lucky, you may run over a mushroom on the ground at the right moment to dodge the spiny shell.
Whenever you go through an item box while either doing races or battles you can quickly tap the "item button" to get your item much faster.
The "item button" is the d-pad for the Wii Wheel controls, the Z button with the Wii remote and Nunchuk controls, the L button for the Classic Controller controls and again the L button for the NGC Controller controls.
Be careful about using the item to soon.
