Unlike other open-world games in a modern setting, Watch Dogs 2 takes players in a centrally-connected San Francisco where almost all objects can be manipulated remotely through a wireless device. This scenario offers a wide variety of approach and alternatives players can take in completing an objective or mission. Some areas can only be reached by remotely controlling certain vehicles or interacting with the environment like opening hatches, electronic doors, etc. All vehicles in the game can also be remotely triggered as long as you have unlocked the necessary skill for it. There are also junction boxes, valves, and other objects that you can remotely trigger or turn them into proximity mines that can deal lethal explosions or non-lethal shocks.
In addition to similar elements from the original game, WD2 gives players access to control drones - one aerial drone called the quadcopter and a two-wheeled RC vehicle that’s called a Jumper. These drones are essential in scouting, tagging enemies, interacting with objects, activating junction boxes, solving puzzles, and many more. They can be spotted by the enemies and get destroyed but they can be redeployed after some time has passed. This gives Marcus the ability to accomplish various objectives remotely, without endangering himself. Mastering how to effectively use these remote controlled helpers is an integral part of the game.
The story in the game will proceed as the player wants it. This means you’re free to roam and explore as soon as you finish the very first story mission. The whole San Francisco area is littered with various collectibles, activities, and locations of interest so check them all out as you see fit.
